Abstract

Violence against women has been declared a violation of human rights as well as a public health emergency by both the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO) due to its commonality and consequences. According to WHO, these consequences can include physical injuries, problems with sexual and reproductive health, mental health disorders, physical health problems, an increase in risky behaviors such as substance abuse and sexual risk taking, and even death. This chapter provides an overview of dimensions of violence against women and concludes with a discussion of prevention efforts.
